GSSW moves up to 14th in US News & World Report Rankings
The Graduate School of Social Work saw its ranking climb from 24th to 14th in the US News & World Report’s 2009 America’s Best Graduate Schools report. “During the past few years we have been competing for students, faculty, and staff with the top social work programs in the country,” said Dean Godenzi. “The new ranking follows this trend. I am grateful to my colleagues from our sister schools for their recognition of our growth and I am indebted to Boston College for its strong commitment to the mission of social work education and research. Today’s result is a reflection of the amazing contributions and the hard work of GSSW students, faculty, and staff.”

2nd Annual Pinderhughes Diversity Lecture Series
Dr. Monica McGoldrick, Director of the Multicultural Family Institute was this year’s featured speaker in the 2nd Annual Pinderhughes Diversity Lecture Series. Her topic was “Culture Matters: What Difference Does it Make”. The lecture was held April 18th in the Yawkey Center. Video/DVD of Professor McGoldrick’s lecture is available through the Graduate School of Social Work Library.

Ahearn Chair Professor Lubben interviewed by CNN
on Retirement Issues

James Lubben, the Louise McMahon Ahearn Chair in Social Work was interviewed by CNN for their “Accent Health” program and CNN Headline News. Professor Lubben discussed the social and emotional issues related to the experience of retiring; why retirement can be difficult, what can make it easier and what makes for a psychologically healthy retiree. He stressed the retirement planning necessary to create a balance in all aspects of one’s physical, mental, social, and spiritual health.


GSSW Alum Cited for Contributions to the Public Good
Erin Mone BC MSW ’99, deputy director for Cost Rica, US Peace Corps, was cited by this year’s Graduate Education and the Public Good Report for her activities focused on the prevention of child sexual exploitation through work with the Costa Rican government and other organizations. She mentors other, encouraging more than 60 Peach Corps Volunteers to pursue a Master’s in Social Work. For more information on this report visit www.cgsnet.org


GSSW Students Awarded Fellowships
Three GSSW students, Bethiel Girma ’09, Patricia Grendell ’09 and John Spears ’09 have been awarded fellowships through the Boston Schweitzer Fellows Program (BSFP), a one-year interdisciplinary fellowship program focused on community service and leadership development. Chosen through a competitive selection process from the nation’s top health and human service schools, including Boston College, fellows serve for one year, devoting more than 200 hours of service to working with local community agencies. AHANA Administrator Award given to GSSW Admissions Director
The Graduate AHANA (African-American, Hispanic, Asian and Native American) Student Association has selected GSSW Director of Admissions Dr. William Howard to be this year’s AHANA Administrator Award recipient. For the last three years Bill has been very active in the association’s programming efforts and has been an advisor and mentor to many of the AHANA graduate students, not only at the School of Social Work, but throughout the university at large.
